It is impossible to deny that the pandemic has shifted the way that the job market has worked. Many jobs that went remotely during the first few months will continue to stay remote or even start a hybrid program. Since this change is happening quickly, it is imperative for new employees to set themselves up for success from the very start. Here are 5 tips to get you started.

Set up your Space- Even if you are using your dining room table, setting up a dedicated workplace will make it easier to transition to work mode as opposed to home mode. Make sure to have good lighting for video conference meetings as well as enough space to get up and stretch when needed. Having a good computer and set of headphones will make it easier to concentrate on the task at hand.

Communication- This is not only critical for your success in the office, but when you are working remotely it becomes perhaps the single most important distinction between you and other employees. Ask what the best way to communicate is with your boss and other team members and use that information wisely. Good communication is what builds trust and a strong work relationship.

Networking- Especially as a new employee, taking the first step to make connections within your office will always pay off in the long term. With online networking, it is easy to send someone an email, introducing yourself and perhaps asking for a few pointers.

Ask for Help- When working remotely, you need to make sure that if you have a question, to identify the right channel to go through and then send off your question immediately. It may take them a few hours to get back to you but having the time stamp and sending it to the right person will help you get back on track faster.

Get to know the Company- You probably already know some basic information about the company that you used when you were in the hiring process. Now that you have the job, make sure to familiarize yourself with the company culture and ask about the impact the pandemic had. This will make you more aware of how people work together as well as provide the opportunity to gain insight into how much experience and training there is for remote workers.
